Trinity Laban March Alumni Round-Up

Our monthly round-up of some of the successes for Trinity Laban alumni.
Community Dance alumnus Juan Ignacio Serradilla represented the Atubarukeke Dance Group of Valladolid at the annual inter-university seminar of Body Expression and Dance Groups in Spain. He led a contact workshop at the Zamorano Studies Institute.
Finally, our piano alumni have been giving performances around the globe. Postgraduate piano alumnus Bernardo Santos gave a piano recital with the Chamber Orchestra of Amazonas at Teatro Amazonas in Manaus, Brazil and Zina Asfour performed at the American University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates, showcasing her latest project Tricoter. Inspired by colourful Oriental fabrics, the work brings together Western and Arabic influences, from Classical to Levantine and Andalusian.

Jordanian pianist Zina Asfour will perform a mash-up of musical disciplines along with qanun (Middle Eastern stringed instrument) player Aysu Sadiqova and cellist Cag Ercag to showcase her latest project called Tricoter, at the American University of Sharjah (AUS) on March 18.
Tricoter will include a performance of works by Arab composers Iyad Mohammad, Tarek Younis and Haitham Sukkarieh. These pieces, including ‘Amman Escape 4 and a ½’ and the world premiere of ‘Three Pieces in the Form of a Short Tailed Fish’, will bring together different western and Arabic influences, from classical to Levantine and Andalusian.
Tickets are priced Dh25 for AUS ID holders and Dh50 for others. The show begins at 7pm at the main auditorium.

‘Une musique-fusion mêlant Poulenc, Piazzolla et Oum Kalsoum’
‘Joli bouquet de notes où Orient et Occident ont des correspondances savoureuses, où qanun et piano riment en toutes cordes accordées, où violoncelle et percussions (tabla) ont des résonances tissées de coquines et tendres complicités. spiritualite’ ‘ Qanun, percussions, piano et violoncelle pour confirmer que la musique a des incursions inattendues et demeure sans conteste un langage universel.’
il y a là une volonté et un désir de jeter un pont entre deux cultures, deux prosodies, deux mondes. Et l’idée est plutôt sympathique. On retient d’abord ce flamboyant solo de violoncelle de Cag Ercag où archet et derbouka, par-delà dissonances harmoniques et stridente narration moderne, ont des rythmes époustouflants et une impétueuse célérité. Telle une cavalcade infernale. Pour prendre le relais, un air de blues intitulé Horses (Chevaux) de Tarek Younis. Il flotte sous le chapiteau à travers la voix chaloupée et aux intonations douces de la soprano Hala Hachem. Modulations nostalgiques et tendres pour une complainte qui vient de loin. Des accents anglais, on passe aux murmures de la poésie arabe avec Mawlawi Ruhi d’Iyad Mohammad, un envol lyrique, éthéré comme un souffle et empreint de spiritualité.
Trémolos d’amour avec le solo de violoncelle de Dia al-Sukkari. Un opus porté au rêve, à la langueur, à une certaine mélancolie. Toujours sous l’ombrelle de l’amour avec la chanson culte Enta Oumri de Oum Kalsoum (arrangée par Iyad Mohammad). on se laisse emporter… Curieux de retrouver les célébrissimes sémillantes Danses hongroises de Brahms avec une pluie de notes jaillies du qanun. On savoure et on sourit à la nouveauté. Les chemins de l’amour de Poulenc sont ici très praticables… Une bonne version avec la voix de Hala Hachem. Bref mais brillant, flamboyant avec son panache ibérique, presque au plus près d’un âpre « vocero », est ce Tripatos de Ravel. Pour conclure, un morceau hissé au niveau d’un classique du genre et qui a fait le tour du monde. Voilà le merveilleux Libertango de Piazzolla, mais où le bandonéon est remplacé par le qanun qui se rue dans la précipitation des rythmes et des cadences, de toute la fraîcheur de ses notes fluettes, graciles et délicates.”
